Grey Water Recycling is taking discharge water from the waste bath, sink and utility water generally from showers and bathrooms, processing it through some specialist equipment and then reusing it mainly for WC flushing. Greywater is created from the potable water received from the utility provider but after being used in showering or bathroom uses then contains heavy surfactants and other contaminants which give it a ‘grey’ colour.
Greywater can make up between 50-80% of each persons daily water usage at home. Flushing toilets uses a lot of water sometimes 6-10 Litres per flush. Using Grey water for WC flushing is a perfect solution, as the more residents you have in a home or mixed use building, the more Greywater is produced which directly correlates with the toilet flushing, this ultimately creates an equilibrium of consumption.
Greywater recycling proves more effective and has a shorter payback the larger the system. We have installed systems which the capital cost has been paid back in as little as 4 years, and going forward buildings can save thousands of pounds a year on water consumption. Our flagship project in Londons King Cross will recycle 6-9 Million litres per year of water.
Installing any water recycling systems is a cost effective way of achieveing better BREEAM and LEED status, if you are aiming to achieve Gold or Outstanding BREEAM for example, some form of water recycling is expected to be included
Our systems use hollow fibre membrane filters to generate crystal clear treated grey water, greatly exceeding BS 8525-1:2010 & BS 8525-2:2011. Hundreds of hollow fibre membranes tubes (fondly termed “noodles” by Vareo Blu) move freely within the membrane bioreactor chambers on manifolds, reducing filter fouling and increasing the usable filter lifespan. Our Grey Water Recycling systems have unmatched efficiency of up to 0.660kWh per 1,000 Litres of treated water, compared to an industry standard of approximately 1.75kWh / 1,000 Litres.
Our backwashing process helps to keep the filtration flux at optimum levels. Membrane filters are traditionally unsuitable for backwashing however, Vareo Blu has developed a completely unique method of backwashing for our Grey Water Recycling systems which protects the membrane from excess inverse pressures while ensuring reverse flow is sufficient to clear bio-filming and particulate blockages.
Our MBR tanks used in our Grey Water Recycling systems are all modular by design, making specification authoring, plant room design and installation, simple quick, and cost effective.
Grey water recycling has many financial and environmental benefits, as well as providing key points towards BREEAM awards, and assisting in planning approval. Some of the key benefits are listed below:
